In 2018, only 50% of the Indian population participated in the labour force, 81% of which was employed in the informal sector, also known as the unorganized sector or the shadow economy.
However these workers, who are in large majority women, remain invisible to the government and society.
Women in the informal economy face significant challenges, as they often earn less, face specific types of violence, work double shifts, and manage family and social responsibilities.
